Family Sponsorship

Family Sponsorship

If you want to bring your family to live in Canada with you, you may apply to sponsor their immigration to Canada, if you are at least 18 years old, a permanent resident or citizen of Canada and currently residing in the country.

The people you are sponsoring must also be eligible and get medical exams and collect biometrics.

Also, in order to become a sponsor, you must “promise” to financially take care of the persons you are sponsoring for a period of time. This promise is called an undertaking, which includes:

Providing basic needs and  financial support for your sponsored family members, starting when they become permanent residents (until they are ready to provide for themselves)

Repaying any provincial social assistance your sponsored family members get during that time

To see if you are eligible for sponsorship and make sure your process goes smoothly, count on our team of regulated immigration consultants to help you and your loved ones move to Canada.

Sponsor your spouse or common law partner to immigrate to Canada

You can sponsor your partner to immigrate to Canada with you, regardless of their gender, as long as you both are at least 18 years old and legally married OR in a common law relationship.*

If you are in a common law relationship, you and your partner must have been living together for at least 12 consecutive months, without any long periods apart.

*If you and your partner can not be legally together in your country for reasons such as current marital status, sexual orientation or persecution, you may still be able to sponsor them, please talk to a immigration consultant for a case evaluation.

Sponsor your dependent children to live in Canada with you

For a child to be considered dependent, they must be under 22 years old and not be legally married or in a common law relationship.

However, if your child is 22 or older, they can still be considered dependent if:

They are unable to financially support themselves because of a mental or physical condition.

They have depended on you for financial support since before the age of 22.

It is mandatory that your dependent child must continue to meet these requirements until the end of your application process, with the exception of age.

Sponsor your relatives to immigrate to Canada

If you are a permanent resident or a citizen of Canada, you can sponsor your orphaned brother, sister, nephew, niece or grandchild if they meet all of these requirements:

- they’re related to you by blood or adoption

- both their mother and father passed away

- they’re under 18 years of age

- they’re single (not married or in a common-law or conjugal relationship)

However, you are NOT allowed to sponsor those relatives if:

- no one knows where their parents are

- their parents abandoned them

- someone else other than their parents is taking care of them while one or both their parents are alive

- their parent is in jail or otherwise detained
