What is PGWP?

The PGWP, or Post Graduation Work Permit, is a work authorization given to certain international students after completing their program of studies in Canada, and it is a great opportunity for students to stay in the country and work full-time after their studies, in addition to being able to explore several pathways to immigrate to Canada and stay permanently.

How to apply for a PGWP?

To be eligible to apply for a Post Graduation Work Permit, the student must meet some requirements:

  • The chosen institution must be on the government's list of DLIs (Designated Learning Institutions);
  • The chosen institution must be a public, post-secondary institution, or a private one that confer degrees (e.g.: Bachelor's or Masters degree);
  • The chosen program must be of at least 8 months;
  • The chosen program must be full time.

Furthermore, an international student is NOT eligible for the PGWP if:

  • The chosen program is a language program.
  • The student has already obtained a PGWP before.
  • The student has completed more than half of the program of studies via distance-learning.

To apply for the PGWP and work legally in Canada after your studies, it is important that the student’s current study permit continues to be valid at the time of application. An international student has up to 180 days from the date of receipt of the letter of completion or official transcript to apply for a Post-Graduation Work permit.

How long is a PGWP valid for?

The Post-Graduation Work Permit is valid according to the length of your program of studies. If your program is between 8 months to 2 years, the validity of your PGWP will be equivalent to the duration of your study program. Now, if the program's duration is of 2 years or more, the Post Graduation Work Permit will be valid for up to 3 years (maximum period).

It is important to note that the final decision regarding the issuance and duration of the PGWP is is entirely the responsibility of the immigration officer assessing the case.
