As of January 30, 2024, the Pearson Test of English (PTE) Core will be officially recognized for all immigration pathways, except for the Student Direct Stream (SDS).
This means that candidates in the Provincial Nominee Program (PNP), candidates in Express Entry-managed programs, and those in need of a language test for any other Canadian immigration purpose (excluding SDS), including Canadian citizenship applications, can now choose the PTE Core.
What is PTE?
The PTE test, also known as Pearson Test of English, is an English proficiency examination designed to assess the effective English communication skills of non-native speakers. The test is recognized by universities, colleges, governments, and organizations worldwide as evidence of English proficiency for admission, employment, and immigration purposes.
The PTE consists of four main sections:
- Reading (30 minutes)
- Writing and Speaking (50 minutes)
- Listening (30 minutes)
Each section assesses different aspects of language proficiency, such as grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, and comprehension. The test is entirely computer-based and takes about three hours to complete.
One of the key features of PTE is its highly accurate scoring system. The test is scored based on a computer algorithm that analyzes responses in real-time, providing an objective and consistent assessment of English language proficiency. The scoring system ranges from 10 to 90, with 90 being the highest possible score.
Another unique aspect of PTE is its format. Unlike other language proficiency exams, PTE is entirely computer-based, with all sections completed on a computer. This makes the test highly convenient and accessible for test-takers, as it can be taken at any of the PTE test centers worldwide.
Overall, PTE is a reliable and recognized measure of English language proficiency, providing individuals with opportunities to achieve their academic and professional goals.
What is the purpose of the PTE test?
The PTE is used for various purposes, including admission to academic programs, immigration, and employment. It is also used for personal and professional development by providing a comprehensive assessment of the test-taker's English proficiency, including strengths and areas for improvement.
In conclusion, the purpose of the PTE is to objectively, accurately, and reliably assess the English language proficiency of non-native speakers. The test measures the test-taker's ability to communicate effectively in academic and professional environments, using a variety of questions.
How much does the PTE cost?
The PTE has a network of over 400 test centers in 117 countries, including Brazil. It also offers online testing options.
In Canada, the price may achieve CAD$340. You can check the full list here.
Is the PTE (Pearson Test of English) accepted by Canadian Immigration?
Yes, PTE is accepted by Canada as evidence of English language proficiency for immigration, study, and work purposes. The Canadian government recognizes PTE Academic as a valid language test that assesses the four language skills - Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking.
PTE is widely accepted by Canadian universities and colleges for admission purposes. Test scores are used to determine the English proficiency of international students seeking admission to undergraduate or graduate programs.
Additionally, PTE Academic is accepted by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) for most immigration programs, including Express Entry, Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs), and various permanent residence classes. IRCC accepts PTE scores as an alternative to other English proficiency tests, such as IELTS and TOEFL.
Furthermore, PTE scores are also recognized by Canadian employers as evidence of English proficiency for work permit and visa applications. Therefore, if you are planning to study, immigrate, or work in Canada, PTE Academic can be a reliable option to prove your English skills.
However, it is always recommended to check the specific language requirements of the institution or organization you are applying to, as some may have their own requirements regarding English proficiency tests.
How long does it take to get PTE results?
One of the most common questions asked by candidates taking the PTE exam is how long it takes to get the results. The good news is that candidates taking the PTE test receive their results relatively quickly, usually within 48 hours after completing the exam.
The exact time to get PTE results may vary slightly depending on factors such as the volume of candidates, any technical issues that may arise, and the specific requirements of the organization or institution you are applying to.
However, in most cases, PTE test-takers can receive their results within two business days after taking the exam. This quick turnaround time is one of the main advantages of PTE, allowing candidates to quickly receive their scores and proceed with their applications or other plans.
It is worth noting that PTE candidates can access their results online through the official website. After receiving their results, you can share them with the organizations or institutions that require them.
In conclusion, PTE provides a fast and efficient way for non-native English speakers to demonstrate their English proficiency. With results typically available within 48 hours, it is a convenient option for those needing to meet English proficiency requirements for study, work, or immigration. As always, it is important to research the specific English proficiency requirements of the organization or institution you are applying to and prepare adequately for the exam to ensure you achieve the best possible score.
Five accepted language tests
With the addition of PTE Core, Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) now recognizes a total of five language tests for immigration purposes. These are:
- CELPIP General Test (English);
- IELTS General Training (English);
- PTE Core (English)
- TEF Canada (French); and
- TCF Canada (French).
All five of these tests assess language proficiency in four skills: Reading, Writing, Listening, and Speaking. Depending on the specific program chosen by candidates, they may need to meet different criteria within these four skills.
For example, candidates applying under Express Entry-managed programs will need different scores based on the chosen program.
In the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP), candidates need a minimum CLB level of 7 for all language skills. However, in the Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP), candidates need a minimum CLB level of 5 for Speaking and Listening, and at least level 4 for Reading and Writing.
Additionally, in the Canadian Experience Class (CEC), candidates need a minimum CLB level of 7 or level 5 across all language skills, based on the skill level of their occupation in the National Occupation Classification (NOC).
